September 7 event to help establish feasibility of dockside markets

SAN DIEGO — Do you love seafood? Would you like to taste and learn more about San Diego’s local catch? Would you like to be able to buy fresh seafood directly from local fishermen? Then come on down to San Diego Bay’s Ruocco Park and take part in a one-of-its-kind survey to help establish the feasibility of dockside fishing markets in San Diego.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, at 9:30am, USD Professor Dr. Adina Batnitzky and Dr. Theresa Talley from Sea Grant Extension Program based at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UCSD) are hosting an event at San Diego Bay Ruocco Park. The event is part of a scientific study to gauge the feasibility of dockside fish markets in San Diego, and raise awareness about the local fishing industry.

There are currently two dockside fish markets proposed for San Diego Bay, near Tuna Harbor and Driscoll’s Wharf. The event is part of the study to evaluate the demand for local fish and shellfish among “locovores,” people already on board with the slow-food movement, and the city’s East African community, which is interested in reconnecting with its traditional, healthy dietary habits.

Besides collecting market demand data, the researchers hope to increase public awareness of the local seafood industry and seafood products. The event will feature chef stations to showcase the variety of local seafood and information booths for people to interact with scientists, nutritionists, fishermen and aquaculturists.

Researchers will survey the downtown and uptown San Diego from 1:30 to 5 p.m. when they will survey the downtown and uptown San Diego community (~75-100 residents).

Included below is a brief summary of the seafood market feasibility study: http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs174/1107257096270/archive/1113276850641.html

Local residents must be 18 years of age in order to participate in the survey. Registration is required to take part in the survey.
