How can U.S. foreign policy promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts? Ambassador Rick Barton, Assistant Secretary of State for Conflict and Stabilization Operations, will address this question at the University of San Diego at 7 p.m. on March 14, 2013.

Assistant Secretary Barton and the new Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations work to improve U.S. and international responses to conflict in more than 30 of the world’s most unstable places, with priority focus on Syria, Burma, Kenya and Honduras. Over the course of his career, Assistant Secretary Barton has led independent reviews on reconstruction in Iraq; developed civilian strategies for Iraq, Sudan and Sri Lanka; created new measurements of progress in Afghanistan and Iraq; and initiated path-breaking approaches to reduction of conflict in Pakistan and Nigeria.

Assistant Secretary Barton will deliver the keynote address at a special event of USD’s Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies. The school is holding the West Coast launch of a new study entitled "Peacebuilding 2.0: Mapping the Boundaries of an Expanding Field." The study was funded by the U.S. Institute of Peace and implemented by the Alliance for Peacebuilding in partnership with the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies.

This event is free and open to the public.

The event is supported by the U.S. Institute of Peace Public Education for Peacebuilding Support Initiative. The opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program are those of the author(s)/speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the United States Institute of Peace.
