A lifelong public servant, Former Massachusetts Governor and one-time Presidential nominee Michael Dukakis and his wife, Kitty, will be visiting campus next Friday, February 1st for a special address to USD students. Governor Dukakis served 12 years as Governor and helped to lead Massachusetts into the “techno age” making Massachusetts the home of technology that it remains today.
Governor Dukakis holds a deep belief and commitment to public transportation and as governor, made vast improvements to the public transportation system, known as the “T” in Massachusetts. Governor Dukakis’s commitment to public transportation, and to the environment, was not just for show, as he remains the only Governor in Massachusetts history to take the T to work. Bostonians vividly recall seeing the governor walking from the T to the State House, picking up litter on his way.
Professor Del Dickson, who invited Dukakis to campus, said, “We invited Governor Dukakis because we know that our students can learn a lot about politics and public service from his example. Governor Dukakis belongs to one of the rare sub-breeds of politicians who, like Harry Truman, is not driven by selfish ambition, but by a longstanding and sincere commitment to public service and the common good.”
The Dukakis’ have also started The Next Generation Initiative, which they founded to encourage students to get involved in public life.
The Governor will address the USD community at 2:00pm in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Theater on Friday, February 1st.
The event is only open to USD students, staff and faculty. Members of the media may attend, but must RSVP to Melissa Wagoner at (619) 260-4659 x4.
