The University of San Diego Center for Education Policy and Law (CEPAL) in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) and U-T San Diego will host the Mayoral Candidates’ Forum on Education this on Tuesday, October 23, 2012. The focus of the forum will be to provide citizens of San Diego with the opportunity to engage with the candidates through questions and answers and learn which candidate’s plan to position the mayor’s office and city to engage with the public school system best suits them.
The two candidates participating in the forum are San Diego Councilmember Carl DeMaio and U.S. Representative Bob Filner. They have expressed an interest in improving public education in San Diego. Each has a different view about the road to a solution.

The moderator is Ruben Navarrette Jr. a nationally syndicated columnist with The Washington Post Writers Group whose twice-a-week column appears in more than 120 newspapers. The second-generation Mexican American is a two time graduate of Harvard; Harvard College in 1990 and the John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2000. Navarrette appears regularly on CNN and contributes a weekly column to CNN.com. He is one of only a dozen Latino syndicated columnists in the US and he has written extensively on politics, education and immigration.

The audience will be comprised of San Diego influence makers including large and small business owners, CEO’s, nonprofit leaders, community leaders, parents, and faculty and students from the University of San Diego.

Candidates will respond to questions from the U-T San Diego readership, The San Diego Voice &Viewpoint readers, La Prensa readers, local education reporters, and USD faculty and students. To submit a questions please email cepal@sandiego.edu.

U-T San Diego will live stream the debate on UTTV.com and Cox will host the debate on Ch.114. Airing of the forum will begin at 5:30pm and last till 6:30pm.
