| Text | The University of San Diego will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25, to announce a major gift that will help the university reach a momentous milestone that will dramatically affect the future of the university’s engineering department. The USD Engineering Department was founded in 1987 with just a handful of students and six faculty. During the last 25 years, the program has steadily grown in size and stature. Today, there are approximately 20 faculty and at least 360 students. The press conference will take place in Plaza de San Diego between Maher and Guadalupe Halls. Although the USD engineering program does not offer graduate degrees, all graduates receive a dual BA/BS degree in engineering. There is no similar academic program in the nation. Unlike most engineering programs, the USD program has seen a steady increase in the number of female students, and military veterans. Participating in the press conference will be USD President Mary E. Lyons, PhD; Kathleen Kramer, PhD, faculty director of the Department of Engineering; Nathan Scherrer, a senior majoring in Electrical Engineering; and the program’s donor.
