Ashoka U formally announces today that the University of San Diego has joined the Changemaker Campus Consortium.  This is an outstanding honor and has only been bestowed on 15 colleges and universities in the world.

To kick-off USD’s Changemaker Campus partnership, the university community will to attend a special celebration at 1PM today in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice’s Garden of the Sky in front of the institute. USD’s Changemaker Hub co-directors Chris Nayve and Patricia Márquez, PhD, will be on hand to answer questions and explain the opportunities this designation provides USD.

As a Changemaker Campus, USD joins a select group of colleges and universities from across the country that, through a combination of education, research and service opportunities, have established themselves as hubs of social innovation.

“By designating USD a Changemaker Campus, Ashoka U recognizes USD’s deep commitment to educating students for social change as well as the institution’s capacity to contribute to the broader field of social entrepreneurship education and research,” said Mary E. Lyons, President of the University San Diego.

Ashoka: Innovators for the Public is a nonprofit, global association of more than 2,500 leading social entrepreneurs. Founded in 1980 by Bill Drayton, the Ashoka network is dedicated to fostering a world where changemakers create innovative solutions to solve social and environmental problems. Through tenacity, creativity and skill, Ashoka Fellows deliver extraordinary results thereby improving the lives of millions of people.

As a Changemaker Campus partner, USD becomes the first university on the West Coast to join the consortium, and the second Catholic University partner.  USD will now share best practices on education for social change with members of the consortium that include Arizona State University, Babson College, College of the Atlantic, Duke University, Marquette University, Middlebury College, The New School, Tulane University, University of Maryland, and Tecnológico de Monterrey - Guadalajara, Mexico.

Changemaker Campuses agree that each university “serves as an enabling environment for social entrepreneurship, providing individuals with access to the resources, role models, learning opportunities, and peers needed to actualize their full potential as social entrepreneurs and changemakers.”
