USD Toreros to Honor Martin Luther King’s Dream
Holiday Will Be a “Day On” Not Off 
 
Members of the University of San Diego community will honor the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,  by marching in San Diego’s annual parade on Saturday, Jan. 15 and participating in a day of service on Monday, Jan. 17.
 
On Saturday, faculty, students, staff and alumni will gather at 8:30 a.m. in front of USD’s Hahn University Center to travel  downtown to 13th and Imperial Avenue near Petco Park for the parade that begins at 10 a.m. Participants, who will wear their 2011 parade t-shirts, are also invited to watch the USD Toreros men’s basketball team take on the University of San Franciso Dons at 6 p.m. in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
On Monday, participants will celebrate 25 years of the Martin Luther King federal holiday through service at the Bayside Community Center in Linda Vista at 2202 Comstock St., SD 92111. From 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., volunteers will do a neighborhood clean up, work on a community mural and paint spaces in the center. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., there will be a community pot luck where the “I Have a Dream” speech will be shown.

“Dr. King worked to create a just world through non-violent collective action,” said Carlton D. Floyd, Associate Provost and Co-director of USD’s Center for Inclusion and Diversity. “We honor his life through our annual participation in the parade and we emulate his work through a day of service. Both events exemplify the kind of collective, collaborative engagement and interaction for which Dr. King was known. Dr. King led by example, and that example encouraged many others to carry the burdens he chose to carry with him. Simply put, Dr. King was not alone. Our participation in the parade and day of service demonstrates a collective presence and voice that supports, shares and continues his commitment to a just and loving world for all.”
