USD Architecture Professors, Students Travel to Present at the Venice Biennale of Architecture, 2014
This summer two architecture juniors, Katinka Bosch and Lucy Hill, will have the chance to travel to Venice, alongside Assistant Professor Daniel López-Pérez PhD, to participate in the 2014 Venice Biennale of Architecture, www.sphericalatlas.com , the most international exhibition of contemporary architecture. Under the supervision of López-Pérez, Bosch and Hill have worked since the end of the spring semester on a series of drawings that respond to the theme “Network Thinking, Patents and R. Buckminster Fuller”. These drawings come from the material of a larger Undergraduate Research Project led by Lopez-Perez over the last four years , www.sphericalatlas.com. Graphically these drawings will represent the timeline of Fuller’s architectural prototypes and patent work over the course of his career and are planned to be exhibited both at the IUAV (Architecture Department at the University of Venice) and at the US Pavilion within the Biennale complex in Venice’s Giardini Park, a historical complex that houses a large exhibition hall, the Arsenale. The US Pavilion was built in 1931 and is run by the US State Department.
The University of San Diego’s invitation was based on research led by López-Pérez into the work of the American inventor and author R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983). The exhibit will be part of the US Pavilion as an “Office US Outpost” from July 9 – July 16, 2014 www.officeus.org. Along with the exhibition, USD will be curating and participating in a number of lectures and roundtable discussions with a number of experts. As an “Office US Outpost”, USD will join other participating universities which include: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture; the Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University; and Cornell University School of Architecture, Art and Planning. Other participating institutions also include the Graham Foundation for the Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and the American Institute of Architects.
