USD Mourns the Loss of Sr. Virginia McMonagle, RSCJ
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sr. Virginia McMonagle, RSCJ, beloved teacher, administrator, and friend of countless students, staff, and friends in the University of San Diego and Academy of the Sacred Heart (El Cajon) communities for more than 50 years. Sister McMonagle died on Easter Sunday at Oakwood in Menlo Park, CA at the age of 91.
Sister McMonagle joined the USD staff in 1978 as director of constituent relations and eventually as special assistant to the vice president for university relations, providing invaluable service locating and connecting countless alumni with their alma mater and introducing innumerable new friends and benefactors to the university. She served 24 years in that capacity, following a career of some 35 years as a classroom teacher, dean and principal at Forest Ridge School in Bellevue, WA and the Academy of the Sacred Heart in El Cajon, CA. She retired from USD in 2002, moving to Oakwood where she resided for the past decade.
In her remarkable 60-year career as educator, administrator, entrepreneur, and advocate, Sister McMonagle worked tirelessly to live a vocation dedicated to the advancement of students in the selfless tradition of the Religious of the Sacred Heart. Among her greatest achievements was her instrumental role in the 1987 founding of the Ste. Helene Orphanage and Père Damien Hospice in Haiti. Admired for her keen intellect, abiding compassion, native wit, and true caring, Sister McMonagle’s legacy is the invaluable impact she had on literally thousands of lives throughout her long and prodigious life.
Sister McMonagle’s funeral mass will be held at Oakwood on Saturday, April 27 at 1:30 p.m. A special Mass in Founders Chapel at the University of San Diego celebrating the life of Sister McMonagle will be held on Wednesday, May 1 at 12:15 p.m.
