USD Using Business Sense for Social Change
U-T San Diego -- Since it was founded more than six decades ago, the University of San Diego has sought to prepare future leaders who embrace the mission of making a difference in the world.
The private Catholic university was recognized in 2011 by the nonprofit group Ashoka as a “changemaker campus.” It’s a designation given to institutions committed to creating social entrepreneurs — people who act as agents of change to solve social problems on a large scale.
Social entrepreneurs have done things such as launch organizations that recruit and train teachers for low-income schools, encourage publishers to use alternatives to traditional paper in books and magazines, and help establish affordable private schools for the poor.
Nineteen public and private universities have been named changemakers, including Arizona State, Portland State, Brigham Young and Marquette.
This week, USD will host a three-day conference titled “Unlock the U in University,” which will bring 650 students, college leaders and social entrepreneurs from 150 institutions to San Diego. Officials on the campus said the annual Ashoka U Exchange event will provide a chance for changemaker universities to talk about what works best in social entrepreneurship education. (Full Story)
