Atmospheres in Ink: Whistler and the Etching Revival Opening Reception
|Event Start Date||Wednesday, September 21, 2011|
Robert and Karen Hoehn Family Galleries
|Event Start Time||5:00 pm|
Drawing from public institutions in California and selected private collections elsewhere, this exhibition of more than 50 prints investigates how Whistler and his contemporaries exploited the etching medium to evoke the elusive qualities of atmosphere. Set within claustrophobic interiors or alongside urban waterways, the etchings included in the exhibition demonstrate the creative range of the etching technique. Multiple states of a single print as well as impressions on different paper types will further emphasize the specific technical choices made by Whistler and his cohort in their printmaking practice. The core group of objects to be exhibited form part of the Zelman bequest to the Los Angeles Museum of Art, a large group of Whistler prints, many of which have not been exhibited since the 1980s.
