We encourage all faculty, student, staff and the local community to read The Bluest Eye and join us for the discussions.

Nobel Prize winner for literature, author Toni Morrison, opens our hearts to the plight of an 11-year old black girl, Pecola Breedlove, who prays for blue eyes and gets them. This vivid, evocative, poignant, even painfully beautiful novel, The Bluest Eye, set in 1941, takes us, the world community, on an imaginative journey with Pecola to get those blue eyes. Along the way, we get a glimpse of humanity and the harvest we reap from the seeds we sow in young minds.

Themes include:

  • Whiteness and Blackness
  • Beauty and Ugliness
  • Purity and Impurity
  • Perfection and Imperfection
  • Superiority and Inferiority
  • Equality and Inequality
