This paper relates to post-entry strategies and examines the diffusion pattern of chain stores. To this end it uses data for the first DIY entrant in Argentina to explore the pattern of store openings from 1993 until 2008, when the firm faced competition from a direct competitor. The investigation uses survivalanalysis techniques to examine the factors that explain the duration of time before which the firm opens a store in a particular market. The results indicate that the hazard of entry is positively influenced by population size and relative market features. Yet, firm capabilities and chain effects do have the largest impact on the diffusion of outlets. The findings suggest that there remain potential attractive markets for first entry strategies into local markets.
