Tim O'Malley has spent more than 35 years in education as an instructor, administrator, and advocate. He began his career in 1973 as an English teacher at the high school and community college levels, first in Nebraska and then in California, before joining the fundraising staff at the University of Portland in 1983. After directing the development office there for more than eight years, O'Malley was recruited by Washington State University to head the development office in the College of Engineering and Architecture, and eventually appointed vice president and director of gift planning at the WSU Foundation. In 1997 he was named vice president for University Relations at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, where he oversaw all development, alumni and public affairs operations for the university. His appointment to the position of vice president of University Relations at the University of San Diego began August 1, 2006.
O'Malley has served on numerous boards and committees in the non-profit sector, including those for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE); CASE District VII and District VIII; the Forest Grove (OR) Chamber of Commerce; St. Anthony's Catholic Church; Home Health & Hospice of Southeastern Washington; Washington County (OR) Hospice Foundation; the WSU Foundation; Pullman (WA) Memorial Hospital; St. Mary's School Foundation (Moscow, ID); and Valley Catholic High School (Beaverton, OR).
His dissertation, "The Effects of Consortium Fund Raising in Independent Higher Education" focused on the efficacy of annual group solicitations of corporate donors for current operating support for Oregon Independent College Foundation's member institutions.
