Program Information

Information Technology Services (ITS) is pleased to once again be offering the Student Technology Assistant Program (STA) for Fall '08. The success of this program has received much attention and the projects generated have been phenomenal. This program is funded by the office of the Provost in collaboration with ITS to offer faculty members assistance in the use of educational technology in the curriculum. Academic Technology Services, will work with you to identify projects as well as find qualified students savvy in the use of technology. In addition to our hope that you will propose a project for this program, we are looking for your recommendations for students qualified to apply for the program. Each Student Technology Assistant (STA) will be paired up with a faculty member for the duration of one semester at 12 hours per week to increase the use of multimedia or web technology in the classroom.

This program is intended not only to enhance teaching and learning experiences for all but to broaden the technical knowledge and increase the organizational and managerial skills of the STAs.

We are now accepting faculty proposals and student applications for the Fall semester of 2008. Deadline for submission is September 15, 2008. Please see Forms to submit a proposal or application.

What is the Student Technology Assistant Program?

The Student Technology Assistant (STA) Program is a service provided by Information Technology Services. Faculty members will be matched with Student Technology Assistants who will assist them in technology-based projects that will enhance instruction and course experiences.

Who are the Student Technology Assistants (STAs)?

They are technologically adept undergraduate students who are recruited, trained, and supported by the Student Technology Assistant Program Supervisor (see Contact Us). Qualified students can be identified and recommended by the faculty memeber or the department. These students will be paired up with faculty members based on proposed projects and skill requirements.

What do STAs do?

They work one-on-one with faculty members to complete semester-long projects that will enhance instruction and learning experiences for USD courses

What are some possible projects?

    • WebCT course development
    • creation of interactive learning modules including blogs, discussion boards, wikis, etc.
    • course web site development
    • audio and video editing (iMovie, Final Cut Pro)
    • basic animation (Flash, Quicktime)
    • conversion of transparencies and slides to digital formats for PowerPoint or web presentations
    • Create on-demand lectures and tutorials using Captivate

How will projects be managed?

A Program Supervisor will be assigned to each STA. Program Supervisors are ITS employees who will provide technological and other resource support to the STAs. For each project, teams will be formed consisting of a student, a faculty member, a Program Supervisor, and other professionals within the ITS group as needed. An STA Project Agreement will be developed, and will serve as the main planning contract for the project. This agreement will include the following information:

    • Project name
    • Lenght of each project
    • Team members roles and responsibilities
    • Identifying project goals and objectives
    • Defining tasks

How will STA Program successes be measured?

Each faculty member and Student Technology Assistant will complete an evaluation at the end of the project. Informal evaluation will take place throughout the course of the project. The project deliverables will be shared with other USD community members via the STA web site and optional presentation at the faculty technology showcase.
