Logic Tutor is an on line tutorial program for The Art of Reasoning
by David E. Kelley. It is programmed in HTML and JavaScript by Michael K. Green. Logic Tutor
provides more than 1100 exercises based upon this introductory textbook. The main page contains
links to files for the 18 chapters in the textbook. Each chapter in the site is organized into
three modules.
-
Tutorial: This component reviews the material in the chapter. It is usually
divided into sections. Most sections are followed by a brief quiz with instant feedback.
-
Practice: This component holds a large number of interactive questions
relevant to the chapter. Most of the practice sections are programmed to give instant
feedback.
-
Self-Quiz: This component simulates an examination. After all the questions
are answered, the program scores the user's performance.
Logic Tutor is professionally programmed, and it is virtually flawless. Most of the questions are
multiple choice with radio buttons. Some questions require minimal typing, e.g. symbolizing
of statements in propositional logic. Feedback for most practice questions is instantaneous.
The exercises are especially good for the chapters on fallacies, categorical propositions, and
categorical syllogisms.
This Web site is useful for any student taking an introductory logic class. Kelley presents
introductory logic is a standard fashion. The tutorial component for each chapter begins with a
clear summary of the material. The instant feedback facilitates learning
