Connecting to the USD Network with Windows 2000/XP

Note: Windows 2000 and XP machines often auto-config their network connections, so attempt to connect to the internet before going through these steps.

1. Connect your Ethernet cable to your computer and the Ethernet port on the wall.
2. Turn your computer on.
3. Find the My Network Places icon on the desktop (this may be in the Start Menu for Windows XP users). Right click and select proporities.
4. Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties.
5. If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not listed, then we will need to install it. If it is listed, go to step 9.
6. Click Install

7. Select Protocol and click Add

8. On the window that appears (may look different than screenshot), select TCP/IP and click OK.
9. Back in the Local Area Connection Properties window, highlight TCP/IP, the select Properties.
10. Make sure the settings are “Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
11. Check Internet Explorer and it should be working.
Troubleshooting
1. Select Start >> Run.
2. Type “command” and select OK.
3. On the DOS screen that opens up, type ipconfig /all. Make sure that there is a space between the “g” and “/”. What you need to be watching for is the circled IP Address above.
4. Type ipconfig /release. The IP address should become all zeroes (0.0.0.0).
5. Type ipconfig /renew. The IP address should change.
6. Restart your computer.
7. Try connecting to the internet when your computer is done rebooting.
