President’s Statement on the State of AAUP-USD

Spring 2000

I took on the Presidency with the hope of reactivating the chapter by renewing some of the accomplishments that made the AAUP-USD so successful in previous years. During the Fall semester the Administrator’s Survey was administered, summarized and displayed on the AAUP web site. I met with the President and Provost on different occasions to discuss the survey results. In addition, there was some interest in integrating the results of the survey into the WASC evaluation. At least two of the committees concerned with WASC standards asked for the results of the survey to presumably incorporate some of the results into their part of the report. The WASC report is now available on the USD website. However, it appears that the survey has had minimal influence on the document at this point in time.

By the end of this semester I would like to suggest two tasks for the chapter. The first task is to sponsor an open forum on faculty governance. The forum would include AAUP-USD members and administrators who would share their views on faculty governance at USD (the panel might include the Chair of the Senate, the Provost or President, and other interested faculty and chapter members). I would like to schedule the forum to coincide with the WASC visit.

The second task is the Health Care Provider Survey which will be administered near the end of this semester. Several members responded to the initial e-mail and gave valuable advice on the construction of the questionnaire. The final questionnaire should be ready to administer by late April. Then the results will be summarized and displayed.

Finally, there will be one more meeting of the chapter to discuss the Health Care Survey and Teaching Evaluation Process (which will be one of the topics for the next Academic Assembly meeting). If you have any ideas, suggestions, business, etc. please let me know so they can become part of the agenda for the next meeting.
