ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

After a highly contentious election season and a post-election era that has seen an alarming rise in the number of hate incidents in our schools and communities, many educators are left wondering how to respond. Certainly, schools are not the place for partisan politics, but we cannot pretend that the emotions and rhetoric stirred up over the past 18 months do not have an impact on our students and school communities. To ensure students have the opportunity to learn, we must make sure they feel safe on our school campuses. Further, as institutions that are entrusted to educate the next generation of participants in our democratic society, it is imperative that we teach students to listen to and learn from one another through civil dialogue that seeks to build bridges of understanding.

PURPOSE

To provide a space for K-12 school communities to engage with one another to develop strategies for ensuring safe learning communities and responding to student and community needs in the post-election era.

ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES

• Identify strategies for nurturing safe school and classroom environments
• Recognize boundaries between free speech and hate speech
• Develop a network of cross-sector resources to support students and educators
• Commit to “next steps” on our individual school campuses and across our network
