Juan Felipe Herrera, Poeta Laureado de California, dará un charla sobre su participación en movimientos de arte, teatro, y búsquedas indigenistas por un arte multi-lingüe, explosivo y de participación total.
Juan Felipe Herrera, Poet Laureate of California, will give a talk on his participation in art and theatre movements and in indiginest explorations for a multilingual, explosive and participatory art.
Born on the farm working roads of California. Graduate of UCLA, University of Iowa and Stanford University. With his interests in theatre, poetry, philosophy and art, Juan Felipe Herrera, from a very young age began to experiment in new genres of writing and performing for grassroots communities.
His recent awards for his poetry include the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Book Critic’s Circle Award, the Latino International Award, the PEN USA award and the Josephine Miles Pen/Oakland Award (also NEA Fellowships in Poetry, 1979, 1985 and four California Arts Council Grants in Poetry).
With 30 books to date, Herrera writes for children, young adults and poetry and experimental genres at large. Since the late 60’s, he has founded a number of poetry-performance groups such as Teatro Tolteca, TROKA, Manikrudo, and the Verbal Coliseum. He teaches creative writing at UC-Riverside. His new book for young audiences, in non-fiction, is Portraits of Hispanic American Heroes (Dial).
