Please join staff representatives of California legislators who represent the San Diego region in Sacramento to discuss Governor Brown’s proposed 44 percent cut of Cal Grants for students attending private, nonprofit colleges and universities in California. Refreshments will also be served.
Background:
In his 2012-13 state budget, Governor Brown has proposed to decrease the financial award available through Cal Grants to students at nonprofit colleges from $9,708 to $5,472. Since 2001, the maximum Cal Grant for students at UC campuses has increased 208 percent (to $12,192) and 173 percent (to $5,472) for students attending CSU campuses. The maximum award for students attending nonprofit colleges such as USD has not increased in over 10 years -- making it worth 30 percent less than it was in 2000 (in inflation-adjusted dollars).
There are approximately 26,000 students attending nonprofit colleges in California who receive Cal Grants. There are about 500 undergraduate students at USD who currently receive Cal Grant awards.
Please RSVP and attend this forum at USD on Wednesday and share your story. Also, sign the online petition to help maintain Cal Grants at their current level.
