Bishop Juan José Gerardi Conedera spearheaded the production of Guatemala's truth commission report, "Guatemala: Never Again," by the Commission for the Recuperation of Historical Memory.  The report, presented in the national cathedral on April 24, 1998, documented the disappearance of tens of thousands of Guatemalans during the country's civil war, ended in 1996.

Two days later, Bishop Gerardi was dead, found murdered in his parish residence.

The film (in Spanish with English subtitles) recounts the story of a Guatemalan prophet and martyr and his country's search for truth. Following the screening, two representatives from Gerardi's office, the Archbishopric's Office for Human Rights in Guatemala – Executive Director Nery Rodenas and Culture of Peace Director Carlos Alarcón – will discuss the film and field questions from the audience.

This event is co-sponsored by the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice, Department of Languages and Literatures, Department of Political Science and International Relations, Department of Theology and Religious Studies, and University Ministry at the University of San Diego.
